Sara Lewis, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC, PNP, LMHC
Hi, I’m Dr. Sara Lewis, a Doctor of Nursing Practice and Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. My path to psychiatry has been a long, meaningful journey that began in pediatrics and evolved through decades of learning, teaching, and life experience.
For over 25 years, I worked as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in a large private practice. During that time, I began to notice how many children and families were struggling emotionally—kids who couldn’t focus, parents who felt helpless, and families who just needed someone to listen and see the bigger picture. I started creating space within that practice for mental health care, becoming the person other providers turned to when they weren’t sure how to help. That’s when I realized I needed to deepen my training in psychiatry and returned to school to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
Psychiatry with the Heart of a Healer
My career has always been grounded in both science and compassion. I’ve learned to balance data-driven care with deep intuition, guided by years of experience and my own journey as a wife, mother, and woman of faith. My doctorate focused on measurement-based care, but the real magic happens when numbers meet empathy, when treatment plans meet trust, and when patients finally feel understood.
My career has taught me that good psychiatry requires both: the data that shows you're actually getting better, and the relationship that makes you believe you can.
My professional path has been shaped not just by what I’ve studied, but by what I’ve lived. I’m the mother of two sons whose mental health journeys changed the course of my own life and career. One was diagnosed with bipolar disorder as a young teen, and another faced ADHD and depression during high school. Walking that road as both a clinician and a mom taught me firsthand what it feels like to search for answers, to feel helpless, and to fight for your child’s well-being. It’s also shown me what’s possible when the right diagnosis and compassionate support finally come together.
Those experiences made me a better provider—and a more empathetic human being. And their journeys taught me that with the right diagnosis, the right support, and enough time, healing is possible — even when it feels impossible. That's why I tell every parent who walks through my door: this is a marathon, not a sprint. And I'll be here for the long run.
I believe every person deserves to feel heard and valued. In my practice, I take the time to listen, to look beneath the surface, and to collaborate closely with my patients and their families. My approach blends integrative psychiatry, psychotherapy, and medication management when needed. I use data and intuition side by side—tracking symptoms, noticing patterns, and helping people make sense of what they’re feeling. My goal is to help patients move beyond just “functioning” and toward truly living again.
I believe every person deserves a provider who takes time to really understand what's happening — not rushing through appointments, not prescribing five medications when one will do, not giving up when things get complicated. My approach combines psychiatric medicine, psychotherapy, measurement-based data, and — when patients want it — the hope that faith can bring. My goal isn't just to help you function. It's to help you actually live again.
Outside of work, my life is full of faith, family, and service. I run a nonprofit called My Med Missions, which supports medical mission work in Zambia. I volunteer regularly with my church and the Emmaus community, mentoring young people and nurturing Christian leadership. When I’m not working or serving, you’ll probably find me spending time with my granddaughter, traveling, or walking along the beach—my favorite place to reset and find peace.
I believe healing is a collaboration. Whether I’m working with a child, a teen, or an adult, I remind them that recovery isn’t a sprint—it’s a marathon. We go step by step, together, until life feels steady again.
If you’ve struggled to find the right provider, I want you to know that it’s possible to feel better, to find clarity, and to be truly understood. That’s what drives me every day.
