Insomnia

Insomnia is one the most common symptoms that adults seek treatment for. Management of insomnia requires one to take account for multiple contributing factors and sometimes co-occurring illnesses that contribute to one’s lack of sleep. Some people are normally “short sleepers” who require 6 hours of sleep or less and function adequately. Sleep needs increase more with physical activity, stress, exercise, pregnancy, and increased mental activity.

Some patients may require medication to assist with sleep while others may need to solely consider lifestyle factors. Symptoms of insomnia include:

  • Difficulty initiating sleep
  • Difficulty maintaining sleep
  • Frequent waking throughout the night
  • Problems falling back sleep upon awakening
  • Early morning waking and unable to fall back asleep

There are many different types of insomnia as well as treatment methods, which includes incorporating changes to your lifestyle, relaxation therapy, and medication management if necessary.
